5 Videos Way On The Liberal Side of The Politics Of Dancing

Last Week | Next Week

Admit it, you dance like an idiot when you're all alone in your room-- or in the shower (let's visualize for a moment). Gyrating those hips, pumping those arms, and dreaming that one day you can be just half as awesome as the people in these videos.

Moby, ft Debbie Harry - New York New York
You know, I've never been to New York city. But somehow I'm confident that when I do eventually visit that this is exactly how it'd happen for me (at least the beginning).

Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice
You've at least heard of this video, I'm sure. How could you not have? The one where Christopher Walken starts dancing around and-- er... flying?

AFI - The Leaving Song Part 2
If you've been around the hardcore and punk scene long enough you've encountered hardcore dancers in the pit. If you haven't? Well, watch out for flying fists! You've been warned.

Yelle - A Cause des Garçons
No, this video isn't from the 80's. Yes, that guy has a mullet. Yes, this is a real dance style called tecktonik. Yes, it's French.

Polysics - Pretty Good
I have no words for the sheer amount of awesome that is this video. Seriously, I have no idea what's going on. Are they dancing? I'm still not sure! But it's rad none the less.

Enjoyed the list? Help me make more! Every sunday I'm going to post another music videos list with a theme, but I can only find so many on my own! I need suggestions to keep this going! I don't care what genre of music it is, just send me a private message with a link to a video and which theme you think it fits in. I'll trim it down to the top five best. Here's a few to keep in mind:

Five Deceptively Simple Videos
Five Live Performance Videos Done By Audience Members
Five (official) Live Performance Videos
Five Film Noir Inspired Videos
Five Best AMVs (Anime Music Videos)
Five Videos That Are Montages
Five (Insanely Intricate) Single Shot Videos
Five Horror Videos
Five Videos That Give You The Warm Fuzzies
Five Videos Where Children Are Our Future (And That Future Is Terrifying)

The funny thing about the AFI video is they were actually listening to Hatebreed when filming the dancers

I'm not surprised. I can't imagine hardcore dancing to that particular AFI song (or most AFI songs).

Songs from the most recent album, yeah, not so much :( ... but the older stuff, no problem. It probably depends on what you consider hardcore dancing.

I have actually seen skanking to Ms Murder, and Kill Caustic is quite inspirational in the pit.

This is such a great idea! I'm already thinking of suggestions for your next categories. I'll send you a PM when I have time to look for embed codes and the such. :D

Sweetseryn: I wish I had an answer for you! I really don't know. I don't follow them that much, so... totally no clue.

Miseryxchord: Eh, hardcore dancing like new york or nardcore style... AFI, even with Answer That And Stay Fashionable, just doesn't quite cut it, haha. Regular circle pit, no prob. There's a difference 'tween hardcore dancing and a pit, haha.

Kitten76: GIMME GIMME! Don't worry about embed codes, just give me bands and titles. If you have a link, that's cool. I have my own methods for getting the video on the site so you don't have to worry about it ^_^

Circle pits spread from SoCal, not NorCal... West Coast and Bay Area punk (especially with our melodic hardcore), hardcore dancing isn't/wasnt about standing there trying to look like a karate expert on speed like with the metal-influenced hardcore split, but it also wasn't about running around in a big circle. I actually never saw circle pits until I started going to shows again a few years ago.

Never actually said anything about SoCal or NorCal (mention Nardcore, aka Oxnard-core-- SoCal--, but only as an aside of sorts).

I think we're both straying from the main comment, which was basically the music AFI plays in general is not the sort that the type of dancing-- whatever you want to call it-- in the video is most suited for. I call it hardcore dancing 'cause all my years in the scene everyone I've known has called it that (I'm from Los Angeles, fyi). Things vary by local and social circles, so I'd rather not argue semantics. It's not that important ^_^
